Learn Video Editing With DaVinci Resolve
I’ve been working in video production for close to 20 years — across editing, production and on-set work. I offer 1-on-1 DaVinci Resolve tuition in Cape Town for complete beginners, editors switching from other software as well as cutting for social media short-form. Sessions are practical and tailored to you — no generic tutorials, just focused time with someone who does this for a living.
Please bring your own footage to sessions, otherwise we can use stock. The goal is to walk away with a finished piece of work. This kind of education is most effective when you are working on a real project. So dig in your archives, beg, borrow and steal and lets learn Resolve.
BEGINNER TRACK
Session 1 — Orientation & First Cut (2hrs) Interface overview, Cut vs Edit page, importing media, basic timeline assembly, trimming. Goal: Leave having made something, even if rough.
Session 2 — Telling the Story (2hrs) This is the core session. How to structure a narrative, where to cut and why, pacing, using b-roll to serve the story rather than just fill gaps, basic audio levels and sync. Goal: Understand that editing is decision-making, not just assembly.
Session 3 — Polish & Output (2hrs) Colour correction fundamentals, audio sweetening, titles, export settings for different platforms. Goal: Deliver a finished, watchable product.

SWITCHER TRACK
Session 1 — The Gotchas (2hrs) Shortcuts mapped to Premiere preset so that’s out the way in 5 minutes. Then straight into the stuff that trips switchers up — media management and bin structure, project/timeline settings, understanding the Cut vs Edit page and when each makes sense. Goal: Avoid the rookie mistakes that would otherwise cost them hours of frustration.
Session 2 — Where Resolve Wins (2hrs) This is the session that converts them. Node-based colour vs Lumetri, Fairlight vs Premiere audio, proxy workflows, multicam. Show them what Resolve does genuinely better. Goal: Stop tolerating the switch and start appreciating it.
Session 3 — Their Project (2hrs) They bring a real piece of work. You cut it together, troubleshoot in real time, answer the questions that only come up when you’re actually in it. Goal: Finish with something done and the confidence to fly solo.

Session 1 — Format & Foundation Vertical vs horizontal, timeline setup for Reels/Shorts/TikTok, templates, importing phone footage, basic assembly and pacing for short form.
Session 2 — The Hook & The Cut Attention retention, where to cut, music and audio sync, captions and text overlays, transitions that don’t look cheap.
Session 3 — Batch Workflow & Export How to work efficiently when you’re producing volume, repurposing one piece of content across platforms, export settings for each platform.

What to Expect
Sessions are relaxed and practical — we work at your pace, not through a fixed syllabus. Use your own laptop with DaVinci Resolve installed (free version is fine to start) and preferably if you have footage you want to work with, we will use that too. There’s no such thing as a stupid question here. The goal is that you leave each session having actually done something, not just watched someone else do it.
FAQ
Do I need my own laptop or desktop? Yes — with DaVinci Resolve installed. The free version is fine for all three sessions. If you need help installing it beforehand, just ask. Download DaVinci Resolve here.
Do I need Resolve Studio? The free version is more than enough for most of your needs. We will still cover what Studio does more.
Where do sessions take place? Remotely via Zoom or at your place if you live in Cape Town
Do I need any prior experience? Not for the beginner track — we start from zero. For the switcher track you should already be comfortable editing in Premiere or similar software.
